Amazon mulls further investment in Anthropic amid AI dominance race – FT

Investing.com-- Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN ) is considering a fresh multibillion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic to deepen its strategic partnership and strengthen its position in the intensifying race for AI dominance, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the talks.

The new investment would build on the $8 billion Amazon has already committed to Anthropic, and is aimed at bolstering its AI infrastructure and cloud offerings, the report said.

The tech giant seeks to cement its role as Anthropic’s primary cloud and training partner, positioning itself against rivals such as Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT ) OpenAI and Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOGL ) Gemini, the FT reported.

The alliance includes joint development efforts on large-scale data centers, including Amazon’s “Project Rainier” in Indiana, which will support Anthropic’s training needs using Amazon’s in-house Trainium2 chips, the report said.

Executives from both firms highlighted aligned goals, though the report noted Amazon’s own foundation model development poses a potential conflict.

Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI researchers, was recently valued at $61.5 billion and has an annual revenue run rate above $4 billion. Amazon’s equity investment remains below a one-third ownership cap, the FT report added.
