Tesla China EV sales rise 3.7% in June amid surge in local competition

Investing.com-- Tesla’s (NASDAQ: TSLA ) electric vehicle sales in China rose 3.7% year‑on‑year in June, though the figure marked a 59% jump compared to May.

The company sold 61,000 units in June, Tesla China said on Thursday.

However, Tesla on Wednesday reported a second consecutive quarterly drop in overall deliveries, putting it on track for another annual decline.

It reported that deliveries fell 13.5% in the second quarter, missing analysts’ expectations.

The decline comes amid backlash over CEO Elon Musk’s right-wing political views and escalating competition from Chinese rivals in the country’s rapidly growing EV market.

Intensifying price war by local players in China has also affected Tesla sales.

Homegrown giants like BYD Co (HK: 1211 ) continue to expand their lead in battery-electric vehicles, while smartphone-backed newcomer, Xiaomi (OTC: XIACF ) Corp’s (HK: 1810 ) YU7, has drawn massive pre-orders.
