Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.19%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Materials , Telecoms and Consumer Staples sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.19%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX: IVN ), which rose 9.89% or 1.21 points to trade at 13.45 at the close. Meanwhile, Baytex Energy Corp (TSX: BTE ) added 6.10% or 0.13 points to end at 2.26 and Aecon Group Inc . (TSX: ARE ) was up 5.33% or 0.86 points to 17.00 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Alamos Gold Inc (TSX: AGI ), which fell 9.62% or 3.79 points to trade at 35.62 at the close. Bombardier Inc (TSX: BBDb ) declined 9.42% or 8.58 points to end at 82.54 and Aya Gold & Silver Inc (TSX: AYA ) was down 8.44% or 0.80 points to 8.68.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 535 to 375 and 79 ended unchanged.

Shares in Aya Gold & Silver Inc (TSX: AYA ) fell to 52-week lows; down 8.44% or 0.80 to 8.68.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.95% to 20.08.

Gold Futures for June delivery was down 2.40% or 79.73 to $3,239.37 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.44% or 0.84 to hit $59.05 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 1.39% or 0.85 to trade at $61.91 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.36% to 0.72, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.02% to 0.64.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.75% at 100.01.
