Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.70%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Wednesday, as losses in the IT , Healthcare and Materials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.70%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were BRP Inc (TSX: DOO ), which rose 7.42% or 3.77 points to trade at 54.55 at the close. Meanwhile, NuVista Energy Ltd . (TSX: NVA ) added 3.14% or 0.42 points to end at 13.78 and New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ) was up 2.70% or 0.13 points to 4.94 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Celestica Inc. (TSX: CLS ), which fell 9.90% or 13.77 points to trade at 125.30 at the close. Teck Resources Ltd B (TSX: TECKb ) declined 6.09% or 3.72 points to end at 57.33 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX: FM ) was down 5.74% or 1.30 points to 21.35.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 584 to 304 and 92 ended unchanged.

Shares in New Gold Inc (TSX: NGD ) rose to 5-year highs; rising 2.70% or 0.13 to 4.94.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX , which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.61% to 14.07.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.03% or 0.79 to $3,055.09 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 1.30% or 0.90 to hit $69.90 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.22% or 0.88 to trade at $73.27 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.01% to 0.70, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.30% to 0.65.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.37% at 104.22.
